Symphony

The Des Moines Symphony Association is proud to call The Temple for Performing Arts the home of the Des Moines Symphony Academy. The DMSA celebrated its grand opening on September 8, 2003, and became the new site for the Greater Des Moines Youth Symphonies (including the Sinfonia Orchestra, Philharmonic Orchestra, Symphony Orchestra, and Chamber Orchestra), the Symphony Alliance's Instrument Loan Program and our music library. The DMSA reflects the Des Moines Symphony's longstanding commitment to education in the Des Moines community.

Mission Statement
The mission of the Des Moines Symphony Academy is to provide fun, enriching, comprehensive and interactive music education experiences for students, teachers and other music lovers.

Core Values
We seek to provide music experiences that:

  • Are unique
  • Are of the highest quality
  • Are fun/enjoyable
  • Occur in a nurturing environment
  • Improve music literacy
  • Emphasize early childhood development

Programs
Academy programs include early childhood music classes, group piano classes, private lessons, and chamber music. Students range in age from toddlers just beginning their music education to elementary, middle school, and high school students. As musicians progress, they have an opportunity to participate in the Greater Des Moines Youth Symphonies. Sinfonia Orchestra (beginners), Philharmonic Orchestra (intermediate), and Symphony Orchestra (advanced) offer young musicians the chance to perform with others from Des Moines and the surrounding area. Adults can also enrich their lives by taking private lessons, joining the Temple Cellists (cello choir), or learning more about Des Moines Symphony concerts in Evenings with the Orchestra.  For information on programs including summer camps and to register online, click here: www.dmsymphony.org/academy/

We are honored to host violinist Midori for an Orchestra Residency Program in January/February 2008. This residency will provide Academy students with opportunities to work with the renowned violinist in solo and orchestral settings. Midori will perform with the Greater Des Moines Youth Symphonies as well as the Des Moines Symphony. To find out how you can become involved in the residency, visit our website: www.dmsymphony.org/academy.
